Most children in our gymnastics program have spent some time in our beginners program. This class (with some exceptions of course!) is the best place to start your gymnastics career! Here you get to learn some new games, have a bit of fun and start learning the fundamentals of gymnastics.

This class is designed for school-aged children (That is 5 and over) with little or no experience in gymnastics and for children who have graduated from our preschool gym class.

Our beginners’ classes are structured to promote learning in basic skill areas, spatial awareness and co-ordination.

Setup

Our classes begin with a basic warm up. This includes a variety of games, with and without music. We then complete basic stretching and body alignment. Warm up runs for approximately 10 – 15 minutes and covers basic skills that will be applied later on in the class.

The next stage of the class allows each child to apply the skills they have learned in warm up to a variety of equipment. At this stage the class may be broken up into 2-4 groups, depending on the size of the class.

At the end of the class we run a short cool down. This usually includes a game and gives children a chance to gradually cool down after the physical activity of the class.

Frequently asked questions about Beginners Gym:

My child is very clever and co-ordinated for his / her age. Can’t they skip beginners? It is our standard practice for all children to come to our beginners program at first. This is not because we don’t trust your judgement. It has more to do with the fundamentals a child must learn in order to be comfortable and competent in the next level. Trust us, it makes everybody’s job easier if children can learn the basics before they leap and bound into the next level.

How long does my child have to stay in beginners? There is no exact time period that a child must stay in our beginners program. Some older children only need a couple of weeks before they have all the skills required to move on. Some children are comfortable to have fun for anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. It all depends on age, maturity, ability and behaviour. We move them up when they’re ready and willing.

Do you have special grading days? We don’t believe in putting that kind of pressure on children. We find that we create happier, more confident gymnasts by watching their progress and moving them up when they’re ready. J We’re always watching...
