Gymnastics ~ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Gymnastics good for my child?

Gymnastics, when taught properly, can be a useful vehicle in the development of confidence and physical fitness in preparation for other activities and life skills. Gymnastics shares the basic aspects of many sports, namely jumping, running, rolling, strength, flexibility and is therefore relevant to everyday fitness. By teaching children the fundamentals of gymnastics, we aim to improve both fitness and confidence.

‘…Studies have shown that by establishing and improving a child's motor skills, there tends to be a marked improvement in their mental acuity and ability to focus. There is a direct correlation between sensory motor skills and cognitive abilities…’ (www.tuffkidsclub.com)

Our programs are open to all ages and abilities. It is true that gymnastics is both an individual and team sport. We believe that everybody can get something different out of our programs.

But, isn’t Gymnastics a dangerous sport?

‘…Sport should be safe and enjoyable. It will never be risk free, but good planning and sport safety management can help to prevent injuries…’ (www.sma.org.au/information/sportsafe.asp)

Gymnastics is not a dangerous sport. In fact, we believe it is one of the safest sports. Let us explain why…

We never teach children skills above their ability level without appropriate build ups and approved skill progressions.

All of our coaches have passed a Level 1 Coaches Course run by Gymnastics Tasmania and are registered with Gymnastics Australia. In order to maintain their accreditation coaches are required to attend a minimum of 6 hours in gymnastics related workshops each year.

Trainee coaches are expected to be qualifying within six months of joining our team, if they are not already an accredited coach. This is of course dependent on availability of courses!

In addition to gymnastics qualifications, all coaches are required to have a current first aid qualification.

We are also involved in the club ten quality assurance program, an initiative undertaken by Gymnastics Australia in order to provide improvement in the operation of gymnastics clubs across Australia.

Why Hobart PCYC gymnastics?

Our aim is to ensure that everybody receives equal quality of instruction, regardless of their physical ability and financial capabilities.

We cater for both recreational and competitive gymnastics. Our programs are able to nurture an interest in competing, but we do not believe in forcing gymnasts to compete in any competition.

Our programs are open to everybody – we welcome children to kinder gym as soon as they can crawl and our adult program is thriving. You can bring the kids along during the day and come back in the evening to learn some tricks of your own! Our Police and Community Youth Club in Hobart also caters for a variety of activities suitable for the whole family – we often have other family members undertaking a number of other activities, such as martial arts and fitness programs in our weight gym while their siblings / children are in their weekly gymnastics session. We even have a new circuit training gym right next door, so you can cater to your own exercise needs and keep an eye on the kids at the same time!

Most importantly, we believe that children undertake sporting activities for fun, fitness and friendship. We promote Fun, Fitness, Friendship and Flexibility throughout all our programs.
